Ergonomics in Interior Design

Ergonomics is the science that studies the interaction of human beings with the things, spaces or environments in which they find themselves.

We can observe examples everywhere; in fact, everything we use in our daily lives is strongly influenced by this discipline.

We see models of ergonomic standards in products of continuous use; we could list chairs, tables, kitchen utensils, construction tools and many others.

If we notice, all these products are manufactured in such a way that they themselves facilitate their use; to which we can conclude that ergonomics in products and in the spaces we inhabit, fulfils the purpose of making our lives easier.

On the other hand, if you need furniture for a small room or office space, it would be worth looking at which are the best options, for example, when it comes to placing a study table, since we would have to assess the hours it will be used, and consequently, the choice of a chair that allows us to maintain a more upright posture to be able to read and write comfortably.

In architectural projects, the socio-cultural, psychological and physical characteristics of the users are used to obtain the appropriate ergonomics, and it is on this basis that the specific proportions and dimensions within a project are defined.

When we formulate the design of an environment, for example, our main objective is to respect the minimum spaces for circulation, movement, needs and physical limitations. Thus providing a better functional practicality, where the components are organised within the space, according to their specific use.

The basis of our projects is to find out who the user is, what function he or she performs and to adapt the best ergonomic issues accordingly. This includes lighting, colour, furniture design, thermal and acoustic comfort, in other words, all the factors to be considered in the project.

Ergonomics must be an integral part of the project and be present at all stages of its development.

In order to adapt the human body to the spaces, we will use ergonomics, applied to the furniture and its arrangement in the environments.

For example: placing a television in a comfortable place for those who use it, or placing a computer at a suitable height for its use, with an ergonomic chair, so that it does not cause pain in the spine, among others.

In other words, spaces and objects are dimensioned in such a way that their use is simple and safe, enabling perfect circulation and locomotion.

Comfort

Finally, we conclude that Ergonomics is based on 3 basic pillars: Comfort, Safety and Efficiency. Applying it well, we guarantee health and wellbeing for people.

By working together Architecture and Ergonomics, we obtain more comfort, accessibility and less stress that certain barriers would cause us, as well as combining beauty and functionality in our projects.
